On January 29-31, the working group “Harmonization of Sanitary-Epidemiological and Hygienic Requirements” held a scheduled meeting, chaired by Boris Bokitko, Deputy Director of the Department for Sanitary, Phytosanitary and Veterinary Measures of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).

Experts from Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, as well as delegates from the EEC, Russian Union of Juice Producers, the Union of Soft Drink Producers, and Non-Profit Partnership of Producers of Dietary Supplements, Medical and Preventive Food participated in the work of the group.

The Working Group considered the results of public consultations on the draft EEC decision On Amendments to Chapter II of to the Uniform Sanitary-Epidemiological and Hygienic Requirements in Relation to Goods Subject to Sanitary and Epidemiological Control (Inspection), including cadmium content limits in sunflower seeds for industrial processing, and a number of other issues.

The Working Group approved draft amendments to the Common Sanitary Requirements to cancel cadmium content limits in sunflower seeds for industrial processing. Once endorsed by the parties, this issue will be considered at the nearest meeting of the Subcommittee for Sanitary Measures.

The parties’ experts unanimously agreed on the need to set content limits for polychlorinated biphenyls that pose the greatest danger to children’s health, in certain groups of food products (including milk and eggs), and also identified the main R&D areas to address this issue.

Following the meeting, the experts to a considerable extent approximated their positions on revised section 20 (Requirements to Disinfectants) of the Uniform Sanitary Requirements. A decision was taken to submit the draft to the parties for final approval.

The minutes of meeting soon will be submitted to the parties to present the positions on the discussed issues in the Eurasian Economic Commission.
