6/2/2020

Andrei Slepnev, Minister in charge of Trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission, and Nevin Gamea, Minister of Trade and Industry of Egypt, held telephone negotiations. The EEC Minister congratulated his colleague on taking the office and expressed confidence in continuing effective work of the parties on developing trade and economic relations between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Arab Republic of Egypt.

As Andrei Slepnev has noted, nowadays there is a significant progress in negotiations on concluding a Free Trade Agreement. Several chapters of the document have been completed or are in a high degree of preparation. Expert activities are continued on the remaining sections.

"My point is that the Union has very serious political support for the future Free Trade Agreement between the EAEU and Egypt. Moreover, we generally regard your country as a kind of gateway to the African continent," Andrei Slepnev noted. Therefore, despite all the difficulties associated with the virus and economic volatility, I think it is in our mutual interests to give impetus to negotiations and bring them to a successful conclusion in foreseeable future".

Following the telephone conversation results, the parties agreed to intensify joint negotiation activities despite the complicated communication regime. In this regard, an agreement was reached to elaborate a schedule for holding expert consultations via videoconferencing.
