EEC Council considered granting Uzbekistan the Observer State status in EAEU

Draft decision of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on granting Uzbekistan the Observer State status in the EAEU was considered at the meeting of the Eurasian Economic Commission's Council held on September 4. The final decision will be adopted by the Union’s Heads of State. 

 

Earlier, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, approached Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus and Chairman of the SEEC, with a request to consider granting the country the Observer State status at the EAEU.

 

Uzbekistan has been expanding its bilateral cooperation with the EAEU countries in recent years. In 2016-2019, Uzbekistan's total turnover with the Union States increased by 60% to 8.4 bln US dollars. Today, the share of Uzbekistan's foreign trade with the EAEU is 30% and the volume of agricultural exports exceeds 75%.

In accordance with Article 109 of the Treaty on the EAEU, the Observer State’s representatives can attend meetings of the Union's governing bodies by invitation without the right to participate in decision-making and receive non-confidential documents.​
