On September 17 in Beijing, Bakytzhan Sagintayev, Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission's Board, opened a round table “EAEU – SCO: Strengthening Economic Cooperation” as part of the “Eurasian Economic Union Days” at the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Cooperation with the SCO is enshrined in the Union’s strategic agenda as one of its priority directions. The relevant objectives are set forth in the “Eurasian Economic Path” Declaration for the period until 2030 and 2045 and in the Main Directions of the EAEU International Activities.“The “EAEU Days” have proven to be an efficient tool of the Union’s international interaction. It demonstrates readiness of the Eurasian “five” for open dialogue and the expansion of free trade areas,” Bakytzhan Sagintayev stated.
The upward trend remains in 2026. In H1, the trade turnover between the countries of the two associations amounted to 197 billion dollars, increasing by more than 17%. The SCO States account for nearly 48% of the EAEU's total foreign trade.“In 2025, the trade turnover between the EAEU States and the SCO countries reached 371 billion dollars. That is nearly four times higher than it was ten years ago, when the Union just started functioning,” the Head of the Commission’s Board emphasized.
According to the Head of the EEC Board, the greatest synergistic effect in the long term could be achieved through four areas of joint work. This entails the development of transport and logistics infrastructure, industrial and technological cooperation, collaboration on agricultural and food security issues, as well as the implementation of artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
“I am convinced that the EAEU-SCO dialogue could become one of the pillars of the emerging economic cooperation architecture on the Eurasian continent – an architecture based on mutual benefit and respect for each other’s interests,” the Chairman of the EEC Board concluded.
The round table was attended by representatives of international organizations, public authorities, the business and expert circles, and diplomats.
