Bakytzhan Sagintaev: EEC is interested in extending interaction with UN

Bakytzhan Sagintaev, Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission's Board, held negotiations with Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, on September 20 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

During the conversation with Li Junhua, the sides had a thorough exchange of views on the priority areas of comprehensive cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union and the UN.

In particular, the sides discussed the possibility of intensifying efforts to grant the EAEU an observer status at the UN General Assembly.

“We are ready to make the necessary efforts in this direction to systematize our joint work,” Bakytzhan Sagintaev stressed. “I am convinced that today's negotiations will contribute to strengthening our dialogue and expanding contacts”.

The Head of the EEC Board reported on the main results of the EAEU activities, noting the positive trends in most macroeconomic indicators since its establishment.

Speaking about the Commission's interaction with UN structures (UNECE, ESCAP and ECLAC), as well as with specialized agencies (FAO, UNIDO, WIPO, IOM, UNCTAD and others), Bakytzhan Sagintaev noted that the EEC pays special attention to the UN sustainable development agenda. In particular, the Treaty on EAEU and other fundamental documents cover all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as 108 out of 169 key objectives for their achievement.

The Commission is active in promoting the SDG 2030 Agenda at the UN and its regional commissions, and traditionally uses the Political Forum on Sustainable Development to position the EAEU as a reliable partner on the international stage.

In turn, Li Junhua stressed the important role played by the EAEU among international organizations of regional economic integration, expressing confidence that the meeting would give a new impetus to the cooperation between the EEC and the UN.
