The Heads of the Eurasian Economic Union Member States supported the proposal to officially launch negotiations on a free trade agreement with the Republic of Tunisia. The relevant decision was made following a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council held on May 29 in Astana.
According to experts, the current level of business partnership between both sides demonstrates high untapped potential. The transition to trade liberalization and the reduction of administrative barriers will give additional impetus to export-import operations."The EAEU and Tunisia have enough resources to both enhance the competitiveness of national industrial production and deepen bilateral trade by improving access to each other's markets," mentioned Andrey Slepnev, Minister in charge of Trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission.
The Commission identified the following key product groups of the EAEU countries with the greatest opportunities for growth in supplies to the Tunisian market: food, metallurgy, chemical industry, timber industry and the consumer sector.
The negotiations regarding optimal conditions for market access will be based on principles of mutual benefit in consideration of the economic development of each State.
The Joint Research Group to study the feasibility of concluding a free trade agreement between the EAEU and its Member States, on the one part, and the Republic of Tunisia, on the other part, was established under Decision No. 5 of the Eurasian Economic Commission's Council dated January 22, 2025.
