On July 31, the Eurasian Economic Commission, jointly with the Secretariat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, held a seminar to discuss the technical regulation systems of the Eurasian Economic Union and ASEAN.
Employees of the EEC Department reported on the main aspects of the Union’s unified technical regulation system, its current state and prospects for development. In turn, ASEAN representatives touched upon the topic of conformity assessment and shared their experience in using accreditation tools to develop trade relations.“Holding such events is an important part of our work,” mentioned Serik Kusainov, Director of the EEC Technical Regulation and Accreditation Department. “Joint seminars promote the harmonization of approaches and help foreign colleagues become familiar with the practical experience of applying product requirements established in the countries of the Eurasian ‘five’.”
The seminar considered the requirements currently in effect within the EAEU for the safety of light industry products, electrical equipment, rubber and rubber products, as well as requirements for food products, including tea, coffee, fish and seafood. The participants discussed issues related to the release of goods into circulation on the Union market and control over compliance with product safety requirements in the EAEU. Representatives of the Commission became familiar with aspects of regulation and standardization in the field of food safety in ASEAN States.
“As trade ties between the EAEU and ASEAN countries continue to expand, mutual understanding of technical regulation systems, standards and conformity assessment procedures is essential for facilitating unhindered market access and ensuring product safety,” emphasized Joe Saw Lwin, Chair of the ASEAN Consultative Committee for Standards and Quality and Director of the Department of National Standards and Quality under the Department of Research and Innovation of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Myanmar.
Following the event, the parties agreed to continue the dialogue.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN, is a political, economic and cultural regional intergovernmental organization of Southeast Asian States with a 60-year history. It currently includes 11 participating countries. Among ASEAN’s main goals is accelerating the region’s economic growth.
The seminar held on July 31, 2026 was attended by representatives of a number of EEC departments, ASEAN countries' public authorities and divisions of the ASEAN Secretariat.
