EEC considers prospects for developing woodworking and forestry equipment industries in new economic environment

Prospects for cooperation between enterprises of woodworking and machine-building industries of the Eurasian Economic Union in the new economic environment were discussed by the Eurasian Economic Commission’s delegation chaired by Artak Kamalyan, Minister in charge of Industry and Agriculture of the Eurasian Economic Commission, during its visit to the Republic of Karelia (Russia).

During the visit to manufacturing facilities of Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill, JSC and Amkodor-Onego, LLC, representatives of the Commission’s Industrial Unit and officials of the enterprises discussed in detail some prospects for industrial development of the woodworking industry and the manufacture of forestry equipment in the new economic environment.

"The EEC has adopted a package of anti-crisis measures aimed at stabilizing the real economy of our Union, which, inter alia, address the issues of financing cooperation, building new logistics chains, and reducing customs duties on raw materials and components", Artak Kamalyan said. "Today we have an opportunity to consider practical implementation of anti-crisis solutions using operating enterprises as an example".

The sides noted existing restrictions and barriers affecting the manufacturing activity in terms of deliveries of raw material, equipment and components, trade and logical chains, and expansion of industrial nomenclature.

"Given that the EAEU is not only one of the world’s largest exporters of timber, but also extensively ramps up forest processing within the country, the forestry industry’s problems can affect many related sectors and industries, including construction, furniture industry, manufacture of paper, packaging, biofuels, etc.", Artak Kamalyan noted.

The prospects for expanding the market and creating new cooperation chains using the EAEU potential were considered, and practical tools for supporting cooperation to ensure import substitution and reorientation of export supplies of products to the Union’s common market, where it is most in-demand, were discussed.

Following the visit, an arrangement was reached to organize at the EEC’s venue a sector-specific dialogue in the field of woodworking and manufacture of special-purpose machinery involving interested representatives of the business community, academia, engineering centers and state administration bodies. The dialogue’s objectives are to exchange information, identify the most desirable growth areas and steps for practical implementation, and to establish multilateral cooperation and cooperation ties.
