Valentin Tataritsky, Minister in charge of Technical Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission, and Symbat Kaliaskarov, Deputy Director of the EEC Department for Sanitary, Phytosanitary and Veterinary Measures, attended the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) session in Rome and held a number of working meetings within its framework.
Valentin Tataritsky and Avetik Nersisyan, a Unit Leader at the Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), reviewed promising directions and possible forms of cooperation between the EEC and IPPC, including jointly implemented activities. The parties agreed to strengthen cooperation, in particular to continue harmonizing the provisions applied in the Eurasian Economic Union with IPPC provisions and international standards on phytosanitary measures.
It was agreed to continue the participation of representatives of the EEC and the Member State plant protection organizations in CPM sessions and other events organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the IPPC and regional plant protection organizations.
The working meeting between Valentin Tataritsky and the Standard Setting Unit Leader of the IPPC Secretariat discussed the issues of cross-border exchange of data and electronic documents in the field of phytosanitary security of cargo in international trade.
"Using IPPC and EPPO best practices in acts of the Union contributes to leveraging the phytosanitary potential of plant quarantine services of the Union countries. This, in turn, allowed the authorities of the Member States authorized on plant quarantine to create favorable conditions for the activities of market participants, reduce costs of issuing phytosanitary certificates, time costs for quarantine phytosanitary control and increase the efficiency of recording its results," noted the EEC Minister.
At the meeting between Valentin Tataritsky and Olga Tikka, Director General of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO), the proposals prepared by the EEC for further cooperation development were discussed. In particular, the discussion covered the issues of improving the organization of phytosanitary control through jointly implementing a range of measures, promoting further harmonization and introduction of international and regional standards on phytosanitary measures into practice of national plant quarantine organizations of the Union countries, holding joint events for exchanging experience in the field of plant quarantine.
On the sidelines of the CPM session Valentin Tataritsky also held meetings with representatives of plant quarantine organizations from Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
