On October 10 in Tashkent, Maksim Yermalovich, Minister in charge of Competition and Antitrust Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission, told about regulating digital markets with due regard to general rules of competition within the Eurasian Economic Union, including law enforcement practice and main case studies.
Speaking at the panel session of the international seminar "Platform Economy in the Republic of Uzbekistan: Competition Law and Market Power of Digital Platforms", the EEC Minister focused on the directions of the Commission's ongoing work. In particular, he told about developing common approaches applied to studying digital markets and activities of digital (electronic) platforms, conducting sectoral research in this field and preparing a draft Agreement on Electronic Commerce.
At thematic panels, the event participants discussed best legislative practices regarding competition in digital markets, as well as the growing influence artificial intelligence exerts on competition and market power."Today, the EAEU law provides the Commission with a sufficient range of tools to monitor compliance with the general rules of competition in digital markets. The methodology of competition assessment enables accommodating factors typical for such markets," Maksim Yermalovich emphasized.
There were expert discussions on applying competition legislation in the context of global digital economy and on the current state of investigations in this field.
The event was organized by the Competition Promotion and Consumer Protection Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan jointly with the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Center, having brought together leading competition experts, as well as representatives of competition agencies of the Eurasian Economic Union countries, Brazil, China, Germany, India, and Italy.
