Representatives of EEC and Peru discussed prospects for developing trade and economic relations

The issues of deepening cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Commission and the Republic of Peru were the key talking point of the working meeting between Goar Barseghyan, Director of the EEC Integration Development Department, and Diego Llosa Velasquez, Deputy Minister for Foreign Trade of the Republic of Peru. The meeting took place on the initiative of the Peruvian side on September 15 via videoconferencing.

Goar Barseghyan has noted that the Republic of Peru is one of the EEC key partners in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

"The Republic of Peru has become one of the first States the EEC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with in 2015. During the meetings of the Working Group, the sides thematically discuss areas of cooperation of mutual interest, which include issues of applying the EAEU Unified System of Tariff Preferences in relation to developing countries, innovations to the customs legislation, special aspects of technical regulation and application of SPS measures, doing business in the EAEU territory and functioning of the single market of services, investment guarantees, issues of implementing the coordinated agricultural policy in the Union as well as regulating intellectual property, innovation and many others. Today, the Commission proposes to transit to forming the agenda of the Working Group’s third meeting," the EEC representative stated.

Diego Llosa Velasquez supported the Commission's initiative and stressed that the Peruvian side would be ready to host the EEC delegation early next year in Lima to hold the third meeting of the Working Group.

During the conversation, the sides noted some positive trends in trade between the EAEU and Peru in H1 of this year.

"The trade turnover in H1 of 2021 increased by 34.6% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 268.9 mln US dollars, in particular exports increased by 29.1% (104.6 mln US dollars), and imports increased by 38.3% (164.3 mln US dollars). Traditionally, the major share of the total trade turnover between the EAEU and Peru accounted for the Russian Federation – 86.5%. It is gratifying that the share of Kazakhstan has grown significantly compared to the previous year, amounting to 11.4%," Goar Barseghyan stressed.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Commission’s Trade Unit who answered questions from the Peruvian side related to the principles of conducting trade negotiations by the Eurasian Economic Union.

The representatives of the EEC and Peru paid special attention to developing a dialogue within the Commission's interaction with the integration associations of Latin America, of which the Republic of Peru is a member, in particular with the Andean Community, the Pacific Alliance and the Latin American Integration System. The Deputy Minister of Peru welcomed the EEC’s proposal to organize separate events between regional structures, during which the sides would be able to exchange integration practices and discuss joint ways to solve global economic problems.
