EAEU countries identified key areas of consumer protection for 2025

The meeting of the Advisory Committee on Consumer Protection Issues of the Eurasian Economic Union Member States, chaired by Valentin Tataritsky, Minister in charge of Technical Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission, discussed promising directions of joint work by the Union's countries for 2025.

The meeting participants launched the development of a new sectoral program of joint action by the EAEU countries for the near future. Among the main priorities of the program is strengthening public confidence in state and non-governmental institutions for consumer protection in the context of digitalization, introduction of innovations and intelligent solutions into trade and services.

During the meeting of the Advisory Committee, its members agreed on the text of the draft recommendation of the Board of the Commission "On Common Approaches to Reviewing the Legislation of the EAEU Member States in the Field of Consumer Protection". This document was sent to the EEC Board for consideration.

In addition, the results of the EEC analytical investigations into the problems of cross-border dispute resolution in the field of consumer protection, including in e-commerce, were considered.

"Creating a favorable environment for the development of e-commerce should be based on a balance of interests of all parties. Of course, primarily, we are talking about consumer rights protection. But it is necessary to take into account the opinions of both businesses and non-governmental organizations in the field of consumer protection. This will allow to create an efficient legal framework within the Union, where the interests of both the seller and the buyer will be taken into account," Valentin Tataritsky emphasized when discussing the issue.

The EEC Minister also noted the importance of applying best international and national practices of the Member States to develop effective mechanisms and ensure equal possibilities for consumer protection throughout the Union.

The meeting of the Advisory Committee featured representatives of the CIS Executive Committee and the Competition Promotion and Consumer Protection Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Valentin Tataritsky expressed confidence that such jointly held events contribute to the development of a broader sectoral dialogue and combine the potentials of the EAEU and CIS countries.

The Advisory Committee on Consumer Protection Issues is a platform that brings together representatives of government agencies, non-governmental organizations and business communities for joint discussions of topical issues arising in the common consumer market of the EAEU countries.

Participation of representatives of the Competition Promotion and Consumer Protection Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the meeting of the Advisory Committee was a practical implementation of the agreements on the joint action plan of the Commission and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, reached when the Commission took part in the consultative meeting of consumer rights protection organizations of the SCO countries in November 2024 in Samarkand.
