Facilitating competition in pharmaceutical markets discussed in Kazan

Representatives of the Eurasian Economic Commission's Competition and Antitrust Regulation Unit took part in the international round table "Development of Competition in Pharmaceutical Markets" held in Kazan.

The event participants discussed legal provisions in the field of competition and patent law in the market of pharmaceuticals; compulsory licensing; violations of antitrust laws in the markets of pharmaceuticals and medical products; response measures; best practices; public procurement in the healthcare sector; and the topic of combating bid rigging.

Competition authorities from the Eurasian Economic Union, Commonwealth of Independent States, China, Indonesia, Türkiye, Egypt, South Africa and Myanmar shared their experience in improving national legislation and handling cases of competition violations in the pharmaceutical sector. The discussion was attended by representatives of academia and pharma companies.

The Commission's delegation took part in the meeting of the Headquarters for Joint Investigations of Antitrust Law Violations of the CIS Countries "Practical application of recommendations contained in reports on the status of competition in the commodity markets of medicines and medical products".

Zhanar Adikova, Director of the EEC Department for Competition and Public Procurement Policy, noted: "When considering signs of violations of the general competition rules in the EAEU cross-border markets, including pharmaceutical markets, the Commission takes into account the specifics of national and supranational regulation in this area".
The event also featured a meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Research of Competition Issues in Pharmaceutical Markets.
