Bakytzhan Sagintaev and Vladimir Putin discussed priority areas of EAEU medium- and long-term development
Bakytzhan Sagintaev, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission, and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin considered a number of issues on the Eurasian integration agenda during talks held in Moscow on March 19. Bakytzhan Sagintaev began the meeting by congratulating Vladimir Putin on his convincing victory in the presidential election, noting the importance of further all-round dynamic development of Russia and successful overcoming of existing challenges. In his turn, President of Russia congratulated Bakytzhan Sagintaev on his appointment as head of the EEC and wished him fruitful work. Bakytzhan Sagintaev reported on the key achievements of the integration association over 10 years of its operations. In particular, it is noted that mutual trade between Member States has almost doubled and foreign trade has increased by 60%. GDP of the Eurasian Economic Union grew by 3.8% last year alone, reaching $2.4 trillion. Most macroeconomic indicators are on an upward trend. The parties discussed the main objectives of the Commission's further activities. One of the priorities will be the implementation of a new strategic document for medium-term (until 2030) and long-term (until 2045) development of the Eurasian Economic Union — the Eurasian Economic Path Declaration. Bakytzhan Sagintaev reported on the start of negotiations with the states of the association to discuss a plan for the implementation of strategic initiatives. Among the important prospects for the development of the Union and the Commission's work is economic digitalization. The parties are unanimous that digital technologies and relevant reforms will facilitate qualitative changes in the economic situation. Other key areas comprise the development of cooperation ties and the creation of regional value chains, the improvement of transportation infrastructure and logistics and the establishment of a unified effective risk management system in the field of customs control. The meeting also included a thorough exchange of views on the development of cooperation between the Eurasian Five and third countries and strengthening the EAEU's position in the international arena. In this context, it is a priority to develop cooperation with leading regional associations — the SCO, ASEAN, African Union, BRICS, Pacific Alliance, Andean Community, specialized UN agencies and the entire UN, as well as with such countries as China, Iran, Vietnam, Serbia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and a number of others. Highlights of the speech by the Chairman of the EEC Board Tigran Sargsyan at the Conference of the EDB, published in the “Vedomosti” newspaper: “Overcoming under-integration”
I believe there is huge potential for the economic growth in Eurasia, which has not yet been explored. And I think that the main tool that could greatly stimulate the economic growth in our countries may be this supranational institution which has been created. Because our main mission is to be able to summarize the best practices that have been accumulated in the countries, and basing on them, international experience, experience of the European Union we will have to introduce these new supranational institutions, which will stimulate the economic growth in our countries. The axiomatics which lie at the heart of our Treaty on the Union is as follows: If we create the common economic space, we will remove barriers, exemptions and restrictions, create conditions for the free movement of goods, services, capital, and labor, which alone will ensure great potential for the economic growth.
