13 Mar 2024 Contribution of regional integration to achieving SDGs discussed at UN venue The significance of the regional dimension of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the contribution of regional integration associations to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were discussed during the side event The Role of Regional Integration in Achieving the SDGs: EAEU and Other Structures. The video conferencing event was organized by the Eurasian Economic Commission on March 12 within the framework of the UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development. The opening was attended by Sergei Vasiliev, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Geneva Office, and Ambik Minasyan, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the UN Geneva Office. The main speaker was Sergei Glazyev, EEC Minister in charge of Integration and Macroeconomics. The discussion was moderated by Oleg Barabanov, Program Director of the Valdai Club and Director for Research at MGIMO European Studies Institute. “Eurasian economic integration plays an important role in the economic development of the EAEU states and is an additional factor contributing to the achievement of the SDGs,” noted Sergei Glazyev. “The EAEU countries take successful steps to achieve the SDGs, introducing these goals and targets into their national program documents, strategies and development concepts.” Sergei Glazyev spoke about the progress in the Eurasian region on a number of SDG indicators, including through the gradual development of the EAEU economic integration agenda and attention to various aspects of economic interaction in the field of sports, healthcare and education. “The EAEU’s aspiration to become a self-sufficient and harmoniously developed macro-region that is attractive for all countries, which has economic, technological and intellectual leadership and maintains high welfare of the population, significantly resonates with the 2030 Agenda,” emphasized Sergei Glazyev. The EEC Minister paid special attention to the implementation of SDG 1, End Poverty, and SDG 2, Zero Hunger, and noted that exports from the EAEU states to foreign food markets, primarily wheat and flour, as well as mineral fertilizers, had traditionally been a strong point of the EAEU economy, and the production and resource potential of the countries of the Union was capable of providing food for hundreds of millions of people. Sergei Glazyev emphasized that the insufficient progress noted by the UN on a number of SDGs at the global level was largely due to the imperfections of the existing global monetary and financial system requiring in-depth reforming. Askar Japparkulov, Director of the EEC Macroeconomic Policy Department, spoke in more detail about the EAEU’s contribution to achieving the SDGs with an emphasis on the development of economic cooperation in the field of green technologies and the principles of green economy in the EAEU. Kanybek Kasymali uulu, Deputy Director of the EEC Trade Policy Department, focused on the relationship between the SDGs and the EAEU climate agenda. Dmitry Maryasin, Deputy Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe, and representatives of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) also voiced their vision. For reference  The UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development is an annual event in the European region to exchange experiences and discuss solutions to achieve the SDGs.
