Andrey Slepnev visited Tehran to discuss matters of concluding negotiations on free trade area agreement with Iran

Andrey Slepnev, Minister in charge of Trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission, finished his two-day visit to Tehran the key purpose of which was that delegation heads considered the main issues of negotiations on concluding a free trade area agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Islamic Republic of Iran. On the Iranian side, the negotiating delegation was led by Alireza Peyman-Pak, Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Head of Trade Promotion Organization.

The discussion concerned modalities of arrangements necessary for concluding negotiations and singing the agreement. All the matters are finalized except for mutual access of certain categories of agricultural products to the market; it was decided to continue negotiations on them. 

Speaking on the meeting results, Andrey Slepnev stressed high intensity of developing cooperation with Iran. In 2021, the trade turnover between the EAEU and Iran grew by 74%, and over the first 10 months of 2022 it increased by another 25% as compared to the same period last year.

"There are impressive prospects for developing long-term mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of transport, industry, agriculture, ensuring food security and in other fields. The future agreement will allow to found these joint plans on a solid contractual basis," noted the EEC Minister in charge of Trade. 

The visit also included a meeting with Mehdi Safari, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy. The discussion concerned possible further steps to strengthen the basis for economic cooperation between the EAEU and Iran.

Moreover, Andrey Slepnev held meetings with the heads of diplomatic missions of the Eurasian Economic Union Member States.
