Bakytzhan Sagintaev, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission, participated in the 16th BRICS Summit "BRICS and the Global South: Building a Better World Together" in Kazan.
During the summit, the leaders of more than 30 states and a number of major international organizations considered large-scale issues of strengthening integration cooperation around the world, including the Eurasian space.
It was noted, in particular, that trade between the Eurasian Economic Union and the BRICS countries is developing dynamically and has great potential for further growth. The trade turnover in goods with the BRICS states exceeded US$359 billion in 2023, increased by 26% compared to 2022 and 3.7 times compared to 2015.
At the same time, the share of the BRICS countries in the foreign trade turnover of the EAEU states in 2023 increased almost twofold compared to 2021.
The Union is in active dialogue with most of the BRICS member countries. For example, an agreement on trade and economic cooperation has been concluded with China and a road map for its development is in place. A free trade area is being discussed with India. Also, China and India are the EAEU's largest trading partners.
The Union's cooperation with Iran is developing actively. In December 2023, the EAEU and Iran signed a Free Trade Agreement. As early as in May 2024, Iran sent a request for the observer state status at the EAEU.
The aspiration to build a systemic dialogue between the EAEU and the BRICS is documented in the Main Directions of the Union's international activities. Next year, for example, the exchange of best practices in trade regulation, digital economy development, customs administration, industrial cooperation, transportation, logistics and energy is envisaged.
