The volume of counterfeit goods detected in the EAEU in 2021 increased by 33% and amounted to more than 18 mln units

Such figures indicating the volume of counterfeit products in the EAEU were shared by Bakytzhan Sagintaev, Minister in charge of Economy and Financial Policy of the Eurasian Economic Commission, at the 10th International Forum "Anti-Counterfeiting – 2022" in Bishkek.

The EAEU countries continuously analyze current trends in market development, including those related to digitalization, introduction of artificial intelligence, application of digital business models and e-commerce development.

In view of the trends, the Commission together with Member States is developing the Agreement on Protection of Intellectual Property Rights on the Internet. In particular, the draft agreement provides for introducing a mechanism for blocking illegal content in a judicial procedure and in the pretrial order, involving information intermediaries in the process of preventing infringement of intellectual property rights, as well as establishing liability in the national legislation of the Union countries for failing to restrict access to illegal content.

"When devising approaches to protect intellectual property on the Internet, it is required to take into account the interests of all stakeholders to avoid creating unreasonable barriers in business activities for rights holders, owners of Internet resources and information intermediaries," noted Bakytzhan Sagintaev.

Moreover, the Commission is engaged in creating favorable conditions for developing fair e-commerce in the EAEU, working out required customs measures, improving goods marking and traceability mechanisms, as well as taking relevant measures in the field of consumer protection and restricting access of counterfeit products to the Union's internal market.
