Strategic documents for EAEU development reflect all sustainable development goals

This was said by Askar Japparkulov, Director of the Macroeconomic Policy Department of the Eurasian Economic Commission, at the 7th Multilateral Forum of North and Central Asia on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which was held in Almaty on November 1-2 and chaired by Armida Salsiah Alishakhbana, UNESCAP Executive Secretary.

According to the head of the EEC Department, current events in international economics and politics negatively affect the achievement of the SDGs, exacerbating not only economic, but also humanitarian problems.

“Nevertheless, the measures implemented in the EAEU have made it possible to mitigate the negative effects to some extent and ensure positive dynamics in achieving the SDGs in most EAEU countries,” noted Askar Japparkulov. "Despite the encouraging results, the EAEU countries and the EEC still have many challenges that need to be addressed further. In particular, it is relevant to combat climate change, preserve terrestrial ecosystems, ensure access to affordable and reliable energy sources, provide decent work and achieve economic growth.”

He also pointed it out to the discussion participants that the implementation of strategic documents for the EAEU development and the initiatives contained in them would help accelerate the achievement of all SDGs by the EAEU countries. In this direction, the EEC aims to exchange experience and coordinate efforts with other integration associations, countries and international organizations.

As part of the session on taking urgent measures to combat climate change, Andrey Panteleev, Head of the Economic Policy Strategies Section of the EEC Macroeconomic Policy Department, spoke about the challenges and opportunities for implementing the EAEU green agenda. “Decarbonization and regulation of greenhouse gases, that is, the climate agenda, is not synonymous with a green economy and green transformation. Decarbonization is a means to an end, not an end in itself. It is precisely this idea that is reflected in the shaping of the EAEU climate agenda and its further implementation in the same package with the tasks of green transformation arising from the Sustainable Development Goals,” he emphasized.

The Forum participants discussed progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda in the face of multiple crises, including eradicating poverty, ending hunger, combating climate change, promoting a peaceful and open society for sustainable development, opportunities for strengthening international cooperation and coordination of efforts in the interests of sustainable development.
