Today Customs Can No Longer Go Without Digital Technologies

This was stated by Ruslan Davydov, Minister in charge of Customs Cooperation of the Eurasian Economic Commission, at the 3rd Eurasian Economic Forum during a panel discussion on the prospects for the introduction of digital technologies in the work of customs authorities.

In his opening remarks, he noted that, based on the analysis of big data and information exchange with other supervisory authorities, today the work of customs services is simply impossible without information systems and technologies.

In this regard, the moderator focused the discussion on the practices of customs officers and those projects that are being implemented in the EAEU countries that make the conditions of foreign trade more convenient and transparent.

Deputy heads of the EAEU customs services shared their experience and target benchmarks. Among the promising areas of work, the speakers identified such projects as the single window, smart release of goods, electronic navigation seals and exchange of information between the services in order to control the customs value of goods.

Despite the widespread adoption of digital technologies, it is important to ensure interaction with customs services on the adjacent side of the customs border. At the same time, there is a continuing exchange of best practices with foreign customs services, in particular on the so-called "smart customs" based on digital cloud technologies.

Speakers from the business community confirmed their readiness to support further introduction of digital solutions into activities of customs services, enabling simplified interaction between customs officers and foreign trade operators.

It was also noted that business representatives created an international association that allows to develop common solutions to systemic issues of interaction with customs authorities.

In conclusion, Ruslan Davydov noted that it is important for the Commission and the customs services of the EAEU Member States to work together to ensure uniform customs regulations and law enforcement practices for the successful Union development and the achievement of the Eurasian integration goals.
