Valentin Tataritsky, Minister in charge of Technical Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission, took part in the first face-to-face meeting of the heads of standardization bodies of the renewed BRICS Member States, held on September 27 at the International Forum “Russian Energy Week”.
The event was organized by Rosstandart within the Russian Federation's chairmanship in this international association.
The heads discussed relevant forms and directions of cooperation, prospects of interaction between national standardization bodies in the current geo-economic environment.
The meeting agenda included the implementation of “green” standards in construction and digital standardization. Approaches to conformity assessment and standardization of artificial intelligence on the example of healthcare and agriculture were discussed. The event attendees shared their experience in implementing a unique methodology for assessing commercial companies and ranking them by reliability, social and environmental responsibility in achieving sustainable development goals. New directions of standardization in the field of non-destructive testing and welding engineering were considered.
Valentin Tataritsky made a report on the importance of standardization in the Eurasian Economic Union's system of technical regulation.
“The coordinate system we work in today as technical regulators is simply impossible without standardization. Its importance for creating conditions for transparent, free and at the same time safe trade is beyond all question. Moreover, technical progress is impossible without standardization. We can see it in the scope of work of international standardization organizations ISO and IEC,” Valentin Tataritsky stressed.
The Minister reminded the meeting attendees that this year marked the 10th anniversary of signing the Treaty on the EAEU. Over the years of the Union's functioning, joint efforts have managed to integrate into the EAEU law a mechanism for coordinating standardization work to keep product safety requirements up to date. Besides, the meeting attendees were shown the progress of implementing the Union's digital agenda in the field of technical regulation.
In conclusion, Valentin Tataritsky outlined the relevance for the EAEU international agenda of the multi-vector cooperation and the Commission's openness to dialogue with the BRICS countries, including in the context of using standardization tools to remove technical barriers to trade.
“BRICS comprises the biggest economies: Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran, China, the UAE, Russia, Ethiopia, and South Africa. The potential of this integration entity motivates the Commission to extend cooperation with it. We are open to any kind of interaction: in the format of sectoral dialogues with BRICS structures in the field of technical regulation and standardization, and in any other formats – seminars, conferences, cooperation plans, and memoranda,” the EEC Minister summed up.
