EEC and Cuba discussed developing cooperation in production and circulation of medicines

The EEC headquarters hosted a meeting under the chairmanship of Georgy Arzumanyan, Deputy Director of the Industrial Policy Department of the Eurasian Economic Commission, featuring Commission's representatives and the management of the largest pharmaceutical companies BioCubaFarma, MediCuba SA and CECMED, as well as regulatory authorities of the Republic of Cuba.

The meeting was focused on the development of cooperation between the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union and Cuba in the pharmaceutical industry, building synergies, as well as technology transfer and interaction between national regulatory bodies, including market regulation and circulation of medicines within the Union.

"The possibility of using Eurasian technology platforms and the financial support mechanism for joint cooperation projects by including joint ventures featuring Cuban companies in production chains of the Member States can be a practical step towards bringing our countries closer in the field of jointly developing and producing high-tech medicines and biopharmaceuticals," Georgy Arzumanyan pointed out.

Chinara Mambetalieva, Deputy Director of the EEC Technical Regulation and Accreditation Department, emphasized the importance of the Republic of Cuba maintaining its position in the EAEU market of medicines.

"We hope that Cuban pharmaceutical manufacturers will perform the necessary procedures for reformatting marketing authorization applications according to the EAEU standards by the end of 2025, and will also be able to prepare marketing authorization applications and launch new medicines in our market comfortably," she mentioned.

Chinara Mambetalieva added that a comfortable transition to the Union market segment will be facilitated by the recently completed joint EEC–Cuba project to translate the Union Pharmacopoeia into Spanish.

In turn, Eulogio Pimentel Vazquez, the head of the Cuban delegation and First Vice President of BioCubaFarma, noted the high potential for developing cooperation between enterprises of the EAEU and Cuba in terms of investment, technology transfer and implementation of joint projects.

The two sides expressed readiness for further discussion of promising issues in a more detailed format.
