The delegation of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) led by Director of the Department for Statistics Yuri Shokamanov took part in a meeting with the heads of Eurostat, which was held on November 29 in Luxembourg. Eurostat was represented by Deputy Director General Maria Bogata and Director of International Cooperation Pieter Everaers. During the visit, an agreement was reached to draft a memorandum of statistical cooperation between the EEC and Eurostat, and the main areas for further cooperation were identified. Eurostat was invited to delegate its representative to a meeting of the Advisory Committee for Statistics in 2013. The participants were introduced to the legal organizational aspects and operational practices of the European statistical system, and the main areas, priorities and formats of Eurostat’s international activities. “We deeply respect our peers from Eurostat. The Statistical Service of the European Union has a history of more than half a century. It is very important that today we have managed to find some points of mutual interest and identify areas to promote our cooperation,” Yuri Shokamanov noted, summarizing the results of the meeting. “Our primary task is ensuring compliance of the statistical methodology applied by our countries with relevant international and European standards. It will enable us to speak the same language and will make the results of our work more trustworthy.”
