EAEU–ASEAN Business Dialogue Held in Malaysia

On November 26 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, hosted the EAEU–ASEAN Business Dialogue within the international business forum World of Opportunities: Russia–ASEAN organized by the Roscongress Fund. At the event, the Eurasian Economic Commission was represented by Eldar Alisherov, EEC Minister in charge of Integration and Macroeconomics.

"The EAEU's trade with ASEAN is showing steady double-digit growth, which indicates a great potential for the development of a multi-vector dialogue between the two associations both at the inter-integration and country levels," Eldar Alisherov noted. "And the key driver of this process is the business community."

According to the EEC Minister, joint expert and business platforms of the EAEU and ASEAN allow establishing direct communication between entrepreneurs, eliminate information barriers and build a space of trust.

"The key task facing the two associations today is to create transparent and clear conditions for interaction between the business communities of our countries," Eldar Alisherov emphasized.

The EEC Minister noted that it is important to study the experience and best practices of the EAEU and ASEAN in such areas as artificial intelligence, green economy, big data economy. "Entrepreneurs from the countries belonging to the two associations actively assist in this, they identify existing restrictions and barriers in practice and seek to find ways to overcome them," Eldar Alisherov emphasized. "At the same time, the greatest potential for cooperation between business communities is concentrated in the issues of digitalization, industrial cooperation, food security, transport and logistics, and financial policy."

The business dialogue was attended by Satvinder Singh, ASEAN Deputy Secretary General; Sangar Kandasamy, Co-Chairman of the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry; William Ng, President of the Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia; representatives of business and expert circles from the EAEU and ASEAN countries.

Kuala Lumpur also hosted working meetings of EEC Minister Eldar Alisherov with Oudet Souvannavong, Chair of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, and Nazir Razak, Chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council Malaysia. During the negotiations, the parties discussed the prospects of cooperation between the EAEU and ASEAN business circles and the key interaction benchmarks for 2025, the year of Malaysian chairmanship in ASEAN.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the EEC and ASEAN on economic cooperation was signed in 2018. A Cooperation Program for 2020-2025 was adopted to implement the Memorandum. It covers such spheres as customs legislation and law enforcement practice, trade policy, business activities, technical and antitrust regulation, SPS measures, energy, functioning of internal markets, etc.

The International Business Forum "World of Opportunities: Russia–ASEAN" was held on November 26-27 in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Over 350 representatives of political, business and academic circles, mass media, as well as experts and public figures from 24 countries took part in the Forum over two days. The organizer was the Roscongress Fund. The Forum was the first major event under the Roscongress International brand.

The EAEU–ASEAN Business Dialogue was organized by the Eurasian Economic Commission and the Russia–ASEAN Business Council.
