Maksim Ermolovich: "The visit of the COMESA Competition Commission delegation is a good opportunity for integration associations with similar functionalities and supranational competition powers to exchange experience"

The Eurasian Economic Commission's headquarters hosted working meetings between representatives of the EEC, the Court of the Eurasian Economic Union, and the EAEU countries' competition authorities and representatives of the Competition Commission of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

The parties discussed competition policy, law enforcement and competition advocacy, as well as special aspects of interaction with national authorities. The specialists exchanged their experience on the examples of specific cases of competition violations and consumer rights protection.

Maksim Ermolovich, EEC Minister in charge of Competition and Antitrust Regulation, emphasized: "Competition plays a key role in developing integration processes. I hope that our cooperation will serve as an example and become a starting point for dialogue in other economic spheres of the EAEU and COMESA functioning".

Case law on competition issues was discussed as well.

"In terms of the number of applications submitted to the EAEU Court, competition cases rank second," noted Aleksei Dronov, Chairman of the EAEU Court. "This is a very good indicator, and it gives us the opportunity to formulate important legal positions in this field, in working out which the Court actively refers to the practice of other integration associations, as well as international courts".

The interaction between the Eurasian Economic Commission and the COMESA Competition Commission started in 2019, and in July 2022 the parties formalized the interaction by signing a Memorandum of Understanding on Competition Policy and Enforcement.

"The experience of our Eurasian colleagues will help us in improving COMESA law on liability and determining the transboundary nature of markets," said Willard Mwemba, Head of the COMESA Competition Commission.
