EAEU food security to be ensured on the basis of common principles and approachesEAEU food security to be ensured on the basis of common principles and approaches

On September 14, the Eurasian Economic Commission’s Council approved common principles and approaches to ensuring food security in the Eurasian Economic Union.

"The approved common principles and approaches of food security in the Union are an important step towards forming real mechanisms for stabilizing the food market, ensuring guaranteed mutual deliveries as well as eliminating existing barriers and restrictions on the common agricultural market of the Eurasian Economic Union," noted Artak Kamalyan, EEC Minister in charge of Industry and Agriculture.

The adopted document enshrined the Member States’ intentions to ensure food security in the EAEU using their own production of agricultural products and food, fulfilling the potential of mutual trade, reducing dependence on imports of material and technical resources from third countries for the agricultural sector.

For this purpose, the Union countries intend to increase industrial efficiency, develop cooperation in the field of agricultural state support, breeding and seed production and livestock breeding.

Besides, the EAEU States will ensure interaction on mutual prompt deliveries in the event of force majeure situations as part of responding to emerging risks.

The “five” countries will pay special attention to developing modern technologies used in the food and processing industry, experience exchange and best practices in the field of innovative achievements in the agricultural sector.

Along with that, the Commission will be able to annually monitor the Union States’ provision with agricultural products and food according to agreed indicators, reflecting the results in the EAEU integrated information system.

The joint implementation by the Eurasian "five" countries of the document provisions will not only increase self-sufficiency, but also mitigate the risks of food shortages in the EAEU as well as take concerted actions to ensure food security.
