Bakytzhan Sagintaev, Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission's Board, addressed the participants of the Eurasian Development Bank's conference “Promoting Sustainable Development of Central Asia” held on December 6 in Almaty with a welcoming remark.
The Head of the EEC Board emphasized that climate change, which affects all aspects of people's lives, including the economy, is among the global challenges faced by the countries of the Eurasian region.
“Owing to the importance of this issue, in 2021 the Heads of State of the Eurasian Economic Union adopted a statement of intent to develop economic cooperation within combating climate change and its consequences,” Bakytzhan Sagintaev emphasized. “It enshrines the intention to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals based on the principles of the EAEU single market functioning”.
As the Chairman of the EEC Board noted, economic integration can become an additional factor positively affecting the achievement of SDG indicators by the EAEU countries.
Bakytzhan Sagintaev also informed that this year the Commission has started preparing a new report “Indicators for Achieving the UN SDGs in the EAEU Region 2.0”. It is expected to be presented at the United Nations headquarters within the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2025.
