EAEU and Cuba consider possibility of implementing joint cooperative projects

The issues of strengthening interaction between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Republic of Cuba through business circles were discussed by Sergei Glazyev, Minister in charge of Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission, and Ana Teresa Igarza Martinez, Director General of the Mariel Special Development Zone of the Republic of Cuba. The meeting was held on February 15 at the EEC’s headquarters.

Earlier, the EAEU and Cuba signed a joint action plan until 2025, which includes, inter alia, measures to intensify interaction between the business circles of Cuba and the EAEU countries.

As Sergei Glazyev stressed, the Union countries are interested in developing trade, economic and investment cooperation with Cuba, including in the field of tourism, pharmaceuticals and other areas. Besides, he noted the importance of strengthening interaction through business circles within the context of developing the Agreement between the EAEU Business Council and the Chamber of Commerce of Cuba.

"The proposals to involve the EAEU States’ business community in the activities of the Mariel Special Development Zone correspond to the spirit of arrangements reached during the visit of the EEC delegation to Cuba at the past year-end. It is required to deepen direct dialogue between business circles as well as to create joint cooperative projects", Sergei Glazyev noted.
Ana Teresa Igarza Martinez reported on the activities carried out by the special development zone and informed about advantages it could give to the EAEU countries’ business community, including the possibility of creating a separate EAEU industrial park in the territory of Mariel.

"Our country’s officials have repeatedly noted that the EAEU and Cuba have high potential for extending trade and investment cooperation", Ana Teresa Igarza Martinez stressed. She added that Mariel was ready to assist in developing this potential by attracting the Union’s companies and entrepreneurs to the territory of the special development zone.
For his part, Sergei Glazyev supported the attitude of the Mariel representatives on developing mutual cooperation.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to continue consultations on creating and developing joint projects.
