Arzybek Kozhoshev, Minister in charge of Energy and Infrastructure of the Eurasian Economic Commission, took part in the international conference "Global Mountain Dialogue" in Bishkek, dedicated to the prospects of sustainable development of mountain regions. In his speech, the Minister noted the importance of enhancing transport and energy infrastructure as the main factor in improving the quality of life in these regions. The Minister emphasized that the Kyrgyz Republic, with its unique mountainous landscape and abundant natural resources, continues to demonstrate positive economic trends. The economy achieved a record high in 2024, with GDP growing by 9%. However, mountain regions face particular challenges, such as isolation, climate risks and internal migration, which require a special approach in the development of public policies. As for infrastructure development, Arzybek Kozhoshev highlighted key projects to build the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan and Balykchi-Kochkor-Makmal railroad, as well as improving air connectivity of remote regions. Special attention was paid to the topic of energy. Kyrgyzstan needs to keep up active development of its renewable energy potential, which will help ensure sustainable energy supply for mountainous territories and contribute to reducing emissions and preserving glaciers. "The RES development and unlocking hydropower potential is an important step to increase energy availability in hard-to-reach mountainous areas, as well as to reduce dependence on external energy supplies, which is especially important for mountainous regions of the EAEU countries," the Minister emphasized. The Minister concluded his speech by calling for greater international cooperation to fulfil the potential of mountain regions and ensure their steady economic growth.
