EEC established procedure for enacting amendments to Union Technical Regulation for Meat and Meat Products

The Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission approved a decision to establish the procedure for enacting amendments to the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union “On Safety of Meat and Meat Products” (TR CU 034/2013).

These amendments were adopted by the EEC Council last September and come into force on April 7, 2024 to clarify the labeling information about nutritional value of slaughter and meat products characterized by natural heterogeneity of protein and fat content that is difficult to standardize. The amendments provide for permissible deviation limits for actual nutrient content values: protein – at least 80% of the value indicated in the labeling; fat, carbohydrates – no more than 120%. Besides, the energy value (calorie content) of the named products shall not exceed 120% of the value in the labeling.

The Board of the Commission determined a transition period for the conformity assessment documents (information) for slaughter and meat products that had been issued or accepted before the amendments date – until their expiration. Slaughter and meat product may be produced and released into circulation until such documents expire. The products may circulate during their shelf life as established by the manufacturer.

Established transition period will have a positive impact on the business environment, as manufacturers and sellers (suppliers) will be able to gradually start complying with the amended nutritional labeling requirements.
