EEC-Brazil cooperation within BRICS opens up new opportunities

This was stated by Goar Barseghyan, Minister in charge of Industry and Agriculture of the Eurasian Economic Commission, after a working meeting with Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federative Republic of Brazil to the Russian Federation.

The Eurasian Economic Commission and the states of the Eurasian Economic Union are actively cooperating with Brazil on a broad agenda. Moreover, relations with this country are successfully developing in various formats, including international organizations and integration associations, such as BRICS.

“The priority of the Eurasian Economic Union's further international activity development is its positioning as a pole of economic attraction on the international stage. Rapprochement with BRICS plays an important role in achieving this goal," Goar Barseghyan noted.

This year, Brazil took over the BRICS chairmanship. Goar Barseghyan wished her colleagues from that country successful implementation of the planned program of activities for its Chairmanship and proposed to add one more item to it: a working meeting of the BRICS and EAEU Industry Ministers with the participation of the Commission.

In the future, such events could be held on a regular basis and continue the substantive dialogue initiated by the EEC delegation in Nizhny Novgorod in August 2024 during the meeting with the line ministers of the BRICS countries. It bears reminding that then the negotiation participants confirmed their readiness to bring the EAEU and BRICS formats closer together, outlined specific prospects for cooperation and possible agreements in the industry.

This year, topics for discussion at the BRICS forum may include cooperation in industry and technology, exchange of experience in this area, joint developing of new technologies, cooperation on economic digitalization, etc.

It is the industry as a driver of economic growth that concentrates high-tech and knowledge-intensive competences. In this regard, the initiative to continue cooperation with BRICS primarily covers joint activities in the field of industry. Within the framework of Brazil's chairmanship in BRICS, it is proposed to emphasize the industrial field," Goar Barseghyan emphasized.

The parties agreed to coordinate preparations for the meeting of the BRICS and EAEU Industry Ministers.

Another important negotiations topic was the development of cooperation between the Union States and the Commission with Brazil in the agricultural sector, in particular on food security issues.

In 2018, a Memorandum of Cooperation between the EEC and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) was signed, emphasizing the industry. Dialogue with Brazil and other Latin American countries remains a priority of the EAEU's international activities, including cooperation in the chemical industry, metallurgy and agriculture.
