One year has passed since the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), a supranational body of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, started to function in Moscow. It is tasked to achieve smooth operation of the Customs Union and bring integration to the level of the Eurasian Economic Union. The initiators of Eurasian integration are not confused with the fact that their example for imitation, the European Union, is having hard times. The Chairman of the EEC Board Viktor Khristenko shared his views on this issue with Itogi Magazine.

By the middle of the next year, all Customs Union member-states will comply with the Model Law On Competition. The world practice knows no cases when the antitrust agencies of different states apply the same principles. In his interview to BNews.kz, the Member of the Board (Minister) for Competition and Antirust Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Nurlan Aldabergenov told about the progress in harmonization of the legislative frameworks of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus.

The first year of operation of the new integration alliance of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan – the Common Economic Space – is coming to its end. The supranational regulatory authority, the Eurasian Economic Commission, is working actively, with more new functions delegated to it by the national authorities, and during the next two years, it will have to lay down the foundation for the future Eurasian Economic Space. In particular, during this part of the year the Commission revised the Common Customs Tariff to align it with Russia’s commitments to the WTO, conducted a special protective investigation in relation to import of grain combines and prepared recommendations for the customs services in connection with increased import of consumer goods from China. The EEC Minister for Trade Andrei Slepnyov told Interfax about the results of work, successes and failures, as well as plans for the future.

The Customs Union of the three states – Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia – evolves and acquires a clear shape. The Common Economic Space is now really uniting enterprises and industries in various areas, and brings together the peoples who were locked in their national flats 20 years ago. Figuratively, this important process can be compared with how one makes door openings that are needed so much to enable communication. The ties between neighbours and states move to a totally new level of quality.

The law making activity in the Common Economic Space member-states is carried out in line with the schedule. According to Nurlan Aldabergenov, the Member of the Board (Minister) for Competition and Antitrust Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission, harmonizing legislation and increasing competitiveness of domestic manufacturers and service providers will be the top-priority goals.
