Transition period for EAEU technical regulation on poultry meat ends on June 30

The transition period given to market participants in the Eurasian Economic Union to prepare for work under the requirements of the EAEU Technical Regulation "On safety of poultry meat and poultry products" is coming to an end.

It bears reminding that the technical regulation came into effect on January 1, 2023. According to the EEC Board's Decision, there was a transition period until June 30, 2024.

The technical regulation covers poultry slaughter products and poultry meat products and establishes uniform terminology, identification rules, safety requirements, requirements to production processes, storage, transportation, sale, disposal, marking and conformity assessment.

In order to remove obstacles to free circulation of poultry meat and poultry products within the EAEU, the technical regulation envisages, inter alia, a ban on introducing water and food additives into unprocessed poultry meat products; standard content of moisture released during defrosting of poultry meat; a ban on using phosphates, flavor intensifiers, benzoic, sorbic acids and their salts, raw materials with GMOs and pesticides in the production of poultry meat products for child nutrition; permissible deviations in nutritional value (protein, fat, carbohydrates, energy value) from the actual values specified in the marking; requirements to the production and use of mechanically deboned poultry meat, etc.

"The technical regulation envisages up-to-date requirements that have a positive impact on the business activities, which take into account the features of raw materials and the specifics of the poultry processing industry. They are aimed at protecting the interests of consumers and improving the competitiveness of manufacturers of poultry meat and poultry products in the Member States. The transition period enabled the business community to move to their implementation in a smooth and painless manner", emphasized Valentin Tataritsky, EEC Minister in charge of Technical Regulation.

From July 1, 2024, all documents on the conformity assessment of poultry meat and poultry products with the prior mandatory requirements issued or adopted before the enactment of the technical regulation will expire. Since this date, these products may not be produced and released into circulation under the old documents. Along with that, they can be circulated within the established shelf life.
