Eurasian Economic Commission expands cooperation with UN Statistical Commission
The Eurasian Economic Commission participated in the 56th session of the United Nations (UN) Statistical Commission as an observer. The decision on granting this status was made at a meeting held in New York on March 4, attended by Eldar Alisherov, EEC Minister in charge of Integration and Macroeconomics. In his speech, the EEC Minister in charge of Integration and Macroeconomics emphasized the readiness for further constructive cooperation. "The Commission is interested in expanding cooperation with the UN Statistical Commission and in working within the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators to elaborate approaches to the development of SDG indicator methodology and in exchanging experience," Eldar Alisherov noted. Granting the observer status to the EEC will strengthen collaboration in the field of statistics, facilitating the exchange of experience and international best practices. It also provides new possibilities for joint work to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and improve statistical methods and standards. According to the EEC Minister, the Commission intends to take an active part in the work of the UN Statistical Commission, contribute to the development of the global statistical system and strengthen cooperation with international partners. On the sidelines of the session of the UN Statistical Commission, Eldar Alisherov, Minister in charge of Integration and Macroeconomics of EEC, held negotiations with Georges-Simon Ulrich, Chairman of the UN Statistical Commission and Director-General of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. The parties discussed the prospects of mutual cooperation in the field of statistics. The UN Statistical Commission, established in 1947, is the highest body of the global statistical system. It brings together the Chief Statisticians of the UN Member States for setting statistical standards, developing concepts and methods, as well as implementing them at the national and international level. The Commission comprises 24 members elected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council based on geographical representation: five representatives from Africa, four from Asia, four from Eastern Europe, four from Latin America and the Caribbean, seven from Western Europe and other States.
